SuperMUC

SuperMUC, the " MUC " suffix refers to the IATA code of Munich Airport, is the name of the supercomputer, which is the successor to the high -performance computer Bayern II ( HLRB II) operated at the Leibniz -Rechenzentrum in Garching near Munich. For this, the Leibniz Computing Centre has been extended to the European Center for Supercomputing. It was the cube-shaped computer building - which houses next to the supercomputer, more data center infrastructure - virtually doubled.

The cost of this should be around 85 million euros for the first phase and 48 million euros for the second. In addition, a visualization lab between the current LRZ buildings and the faculty is planned mathematics / computer science from the Technical University Munich. The total cost will amount to approximately EUR 135 million and supported by the federal government and the Free State of Bavaria. On 13 December 2010 it was announced that IBM had undertaken to build SuperMUC. The construction was completed in the spring of 2011, the start began in late 2011. Since July 2012, the computer is fully operational.

SuperMUC is equipped with 18,432 Intel Xeon E5- 2680 CPUs ( 8 cores, 2.7 GHz) and 820 Intel Xeon E7 - 4870 CPUs ( 10 cores, 2.4 GHz), a RAM of 340 terabytes ( = 1012 bytes, TB), 4 petabytes ( = 1015 bytes, PB) permanent NAS - disk space ( > 3,400 SATA-HD s, 2 TB, double- parity RAID), 10 PB temporary GPFS disk storage, as well as a tape storage system of more 30 PB. It is cooled by a cooling system Aquasar. The peak computing power of 3.19 petaflops ( 1015 = Floating Point Operations Per Second ).

SuperMUC was named 18 June 2012 at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg as the fastest supercomputer in Europe. On July 20, 2012, the official inauguration was followed by the Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan ( CDU) and the Bavarian Minister of State for Science, Research and Art Wolfgang Heubisch (FDP).

As now, most supercomputers is also SuperMUC a Linux distribution ( here SUSE Linux Enterprise Server ) as the operating system.
