Action

The medical spaceship Nightingale 229 has a crew of six and is commanded by Captain Marley. The other crew members are the first officer Nick Vanzant, the physician Dr. Kaela Evers, the computer specialist Benj Sotomejor and two other doctors. Having collected an emergency call, the team is taking a leap to a 4000 light years distant moon, to provide assistance there. Due to a technical fault the captain is seriously injured and dies. The Nightingale is hit by asteroids and loses almost all fuel.

Shortly afterwards, a shuttle docked to the Nightingale with the adventurer Troy. Only in the later action is clear that this is the externally modified Karl Larson, who had deposed the emergency call. This brings secretly an alien artifact in the ship, which already caused a mutation in him. After the crew has discovered the artifact suggests Troy ( Larson ) to bring this to the earth, there to make money and to involve the crew in the competition. Vanzant but refuses to take the artifact to the earth, because they do not know whether present a risk to of the artifact. He then flies to the tender of the Nightingale to the moon to recover additional fuel there.

Larson, who has developed due to the mutation superhuman strength and tremendous self-healing, then begins to kill some of the crew and to commit acts of sabotage. Among other things, he tells the tender, which has landed on the moon to start by remote control without Vanzant. However Vanzant can use an escape pod, which he had taken precaution to return to the ship.

It turns out that the artifact includes neundimensionale matter, which can turn a star into a supernova and create new three-dimensional matter. Vanzant and Evers therefore try at all costs, Larson discourage them to bring the artifact to the planet who wants to make it there to make money. Finally, they succeed Larson to hurl together with the artifact from the space ship. As the only survivor they then return to Earth, while the artifact transforms the abandoned star in a supernova.
