Supreme Court of Lithuania

The Supreme Court of Lithuania (Lithuanian Lietuvos Aukščiausiasis Teismas, verk LAT -. , The Supreme Court of Lithuania ) is the highest court in the ordinary courts of Lithuania.

The Supreme Court of Lithuania is the only cassation. The Supreme Court is responsible for the review of final judgments, decisions, rulings and decisions of the competent courts in general. The Supreme Court is responsible for the development of consistent case law in the interpretation and application of laws and other legal acts.

  • Presiding Judge for Criminal Matters is Jonas Prapiestis (* 1952) (his predecessor was Jonas Algirdas Riepšas )
  • Presiding judge for civil matters is Janina Stripeikienė (* 1955) (her predecessor was Česlovas Jokūbauskas to 26 June 2005).

History

The Supreme Court of Lithuania on 15 June 1994 pursuant to statute " del Lietuvos Aukščiausiojo Teismo, Lietuvos apeliacinio teismo, apygardų teismų įsteigimo, apygardų ir apylinkių teismų veiklos teritorijų nustatymo " ( Žin., 1994, No.50 -932 ). His activities began on 1 January 1995.

Composition

The LAT is divided into Senate that are occupied each with a presiding judge and assessors. Aukščiausiasis Teismas consists of 37 judges ( on 1 January 2009 worked 34 judges).

The Court shall consist of a Civil and Criminal Division.

Judge

In LAT worked a total of 34 judges (2009):

  • President of the court,
  • Presiding judge for civil matters ( civilinių bylų skyriaus pirmin incas )
  • Presiding Judge for Criminal Matters ( baudžiamųjų bylų skyriaus pirmin incas )
  • 16 criminal judges,
  • 15 civil judges.

The average age of the judges is 53 years.
