Surianaceae

Suriana maritima, habit and flowers.

The Surianaceae are a plant family in the order of the butterfly -like flowers ( Fabales ). Of the five genera and eight species drie genus come with four species found only in Australia and one genus with three species only in Mexico, a monotypic genus is widespread in tropical coasts worldwide.

Description

The family contains only woody plants: trees, shrubs. The spiral or double-spaced on branch arranged leaves are rarely simple, usually pinnate; the leaflets are arranged opposite one another on the rachis. Stipules absent.

The flowers are borne in inflorescences zymösen. The hermaphroditic, flowers are radial symmetry fünfzählig. You have five sepals and petals. In two circles they usually have ten, or rarely eight, free stamens. Most often two to five Upper constant carpels are free ( apokarp ); only Guilfoylia a carpel is present. They form berries, stone fruits or nuts.

Occurrence

The representatives of the family are mainly located in Australia. Only the genus Recchia is found only in Mexico. The type Suriana maritima, however, has a pantropical distribution. They colonize a wide range of habitats from Strandvegetion and deserts to tropical rainforest.

Systematics and distribution

The genera of this family were formerly classified in the family of Simaroubaceae. The family includes five genera Surianaceae with about eight species.

  • Cadellia F.Muell. Contains only one type: Cadellia pentastylis F.Muell. It occurs only in New South Wales and Queensland.
  • Guilfoylia monostylis ( Benth. ) F.Muell. ( Syn: Cadellia monostylis Benth. ): It occurs only in New South Wales and Queensland.
  • Recchia connaroides ( Del. & Soler. ) Standlschmaus.
  • Recchia mexicana Moc. & Sessé ex DC.
  • Recchia simplicifolia T.Wendt & EJLott: It is a tree with simple instead of pinnate leaves. It occurs only in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Veracruz, and was founded in 1998 for the IUCN Red List = as " Endangered ", " high risk " rating.
  • Stylobasium australe ( Hook. ) Prance
  • Stylobasium spathulatum Desf. It occurs in the Northern Territory, south-west Queensland and Western Australia.
  • Suriana maritima L.: She comes to the coastal tropics worldwide.
