Sürmene (Greek Σούρμενα, Sourmena ) is a small town in the Turkish province of Trabzon. It is located in north-eastern Turkey on the Black Sea coast between Trabzon and Rize province capitals, 35 kilometers east of Trabzon and 14 kilometers west of the town of Of.

History

Sürmene was original eight kilometers west of the site of the present town Araklı at the mouth of the Kara Dere and was rebuilt in the early 20th century to its present location. Probably from the Roman period to the middle of the 7th century settlement existed at a large fortified military camp south of the present village Canayer. In the Middle Ages there was there, just to the west of Araklı, a protected by a fortified settlement.

Economy

80 % of the population earn their living in agriculture. In particular, the cultivation of tea and hazelnuts contributes to the income of residents in Sürmene. In Sürmene are a tea factory state ( Caykur ) and nine private Teemanufakturen with a total of about 600 employees. The fishing provides many people's livelihood.

In addition, eight shipbuilding companies have settled in Sürmene, which together employ about 180 people.

Sürmene has made national and international reputation in the manufacture of knives. The company provides Sürbisa under the name " Sürmene " knives for the household sector ago. Many smaller factories manufacture handmade knives used in hunting or in the household or sold as trinkets. The knife also plays the lead role in a for Sürmene typical folk ( Bicak Horonu ).

The most famous culinary specialty is a strudel, prepared with cheese or minced meat ( Sürmene Pidesi ).
