Swami Kuvalayananda

Swami Kuvalayananda (actually Jagannath Ganesh Gune, born August 30, 1883 in Dabhoi, † April 18, 1966 ) was an Indian yoga master, who was instrumental in the popularization of Hatha Yoga and one of the first physiological effects of hatha yoga examined scientifically.

Life

Jagannath Ganesh Gune was born on 30 August 1883 in Dabhoi in the former princely state of Baroda. From 1907 to 1910 he coached at Rajaratna Manikrao gymnastics and martial arts, later became a disciple of Paramahamsa Shri Madhavadasaji ( 1789-1921 ) and thus a classmate of Shri Yogendra ( 1897-1989 ). In 1920 he studied for the first time in Baroda Hospital physiological effects on the body of Hatha Yoga practices such as asana, pranayama, bandha and kriya.

In 1924 he founded in Lonavala (Maharashtra) Kaivalyadhama the Institute, with the aim to explore the effects of Hatha yoga scientifically and to develop therapeutic applications. The research is published in the year since this appears magazine Yoga Mimamsa. The Institute also collaborates with well-known scientists, such as the biologist JBS Haldane.

In 1927 he was awarded by the Government of Mumbai mission is to develop methods to teach yogic practices in classes at schools and universities.

Importance

Swami Kuvalayananda developed methods, such as Hatha Yoga can be taught for larger groups, with drill was a hallmark of his style. He was among the first who used the Hatha yoga for therapeutic purposes.

T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989), one of the great pioneers of modern hatha yoga, was sent by the Maharaja of Mysore to the Kaivalyadhama institutions to observe the methods of Kuvalayananda.

One of his students was Armin God man.
