Sweet Bird of Youth (film)

Sweet Bird of Youth (English original title Sweet Bird of Youth) is a film from the year 1962. It is based on the eponymous drama drama from 1959 by Tennessee Williams. The leading roles are played by the same actors Paul Newman and Geraldine Page, who had already appeared in the stage production.

Action

Chance Wayne returns as a companion to come into the years movie star Alexandra Del Lago in his hometown because he hoped through this a career move. His real goal, however, to marry the daughter of a powerful politician who is known as Boss Finley. Finley is it little excited and tried using the local law enforcement officials from the city to expel him. Finally, the artist turns away from him and makes him fall. Wayne gets beaten up by the men of Finley, but in the end he escapes along with his daughter.

Differences from the stage version

A significant difference in the film adaptation lies in the representation of the violent destruction of the love affair between chance and Wayne Heavenly Finley. In the original the woman is infertile due to infection with syphilis and loses her uterus. In the film, this was changed to a pregnancy and a subsequent abortion. Also the original castration of Wayne is mitigated. Wayne is only beaten by the men Finley, so that the couple can drive off at the end with the car and start a family, nothing more stands in the way. Others

In the film, Geraldine Page is the aging actress Alexandra Del Lago, Paul Newman, her much younger lover. In fact, Page was only a few months older than Newman. Newman, in turn, is said to be around 30 in the film, was on the set of already 37 years old.
