Sweet Inspirations

The Sweet Inspirations are an American vocal group, the 1967 recorded her first record. At that time, the group consisted of Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney Houston and aunt of Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick ), Estelle Brown, Myrna Smith, Sylvia Shemwell and (sister of Judy Clay ). She became internationally known mainly through its cooperation with Elvis Presley.

History

The beginnings of rooted in gospel and soul group go back to one in the late 1950s by sisters Cissy Houston (originally Emily Drinkard ) and Lee Warwick ( born Drinkard ) launched singing group, which also Lee's daughter Dee Dee Warwick participated. The group met in their early days under the name of The Drinkard Sisters.

Dee Dee Warwick was the main singer of the group until they left in 1965 to start a solo career. It was replaced by Myrna Smith.

1967 had the Sweet Inspirations with as accompanying the choir at Van Morrison's hit Brown Eyed Girl, which was published in June 1967 and reached # 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In the same year produced the Sweet Inspirations under the label of Atlantic Records, its first own recordings.

1968 followed by two more LPs the group and their involvement with Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland LP and Dusty Springfield Dusty In Memphis LP.

In the following years they were companions of Elvis Presley and include in the documentary Elvis - to see That's the Way It Is. At the same time they worked occasionally with Aretha Franklin.

Their fourth LP ( Sweets For My Sweet) appeared in 1969. Then left Cissy Houston, the group to pursue her solo career and to spend more time with her family. The recorded end of 1970 LP Sweet, Sweet Soul has already been taken with their short-term successor Ann Williams, a friend of Estelle Brown. After Williams had to leave the group again soon, the Sweet Inspirations continued to work as a trio.

In 1978, she appeared in the movie Grease as accompanying the choir. A year later, Estelle Brown left the group and was at the BeeGees tour Spirits Having Flown replaced by Gloria Brown, while Pat Terry stepped in for the recordings of the same year (1979 ) published LP Hot Butterfly. The group then broke up, but was revived in 1994 by Estelle Brown, Myrna Smith, Sylvia Shemwell and as well as the newly added Portia Griffin. In 2005, the group released again an LP. Two of their members died 2010: Sylvia Shernwell on February 13, and Myrna Smith on December 24.
