Geology

In Kielce Bergland the oldest rocks occur in Poland -a-days. The mountain consists for the most part now available from marine deposits as greywacke, sandstones, shales and quartzites. In these rocks is ample evidence of the rich life in the former seas in the form of fossil traces of plant and animal organisms have received, many of which have been scientifically described. The rocks were folded for the first time during the Caledonian orogeny about 450 million years ago. During the Variscan orogeny in front of around 360 million years they have been deformed a second time and folded into a mountain. In the following years the mountain has been largely removed and covered by young sediments, but it came in the Neogene tectonic processes associated with the wrinkling of the Carpathians again to uplift, so the old layers of rock were exposed again.

In the two million years of the Quaternary the Kielce Bergland was temporarily covered by a glacier.
