Syringe

When syringe is called a medical instrument for administration ( injection) of liquid medications - the so-called injectables - is used.

Construction

A syringe consists of a cylindrical cavity, a piston movable therein and a cone-shaped nozzle ( luer slip ). There are also versions with screw threads on the nozzle ( Luer Lock). In these, a hollow needle ( cannula ) or a hose can be connected. Common disposable syringes made of plastic. There are two part syringes, which consist only of the cylinder and a piston, as well as three-piece syringes that do not have a rubber stopper at the bottom of the piston. For small syringes (such as insulin syringes), the cannula is glued in place. Reusable syringes ( rarely used in human medicine ) made of glass, metal and rubber. Revolver syringes are used in veterinary medicine.

Commercially available sizes range from 0.5 to 100 ml volume.

In spite of the term " single-use syringe " these syringes could be used again. To actually exclude multiple use, the so-called AD was ( " auto -disable " ) syringe developed in recent years. There are various solutions and patents that prevent reattachment ( breaking point on the pistons, valves, etc.). UNICEF vaccination campaigns are carried out only with AD syringes.

Use

By train on the plunger, the syringe is filled. By pressing on the plunger of the contents is forced through the nozzle. Are drugs administered by injection, it is called an injection.

Intravenous injections generally act faster and better than orally given drugs, because they have to overcome on the way to the site of action less physiological barriers. There are also drugs (such as protein drugs such as insulin, antibodies), which must be given parenterally, since they do not added in oral absorption or in a sufficient amount into the blood circuit ( absorbed ) to be degraded by enzymes of the digestive tract or be denatured by the existing in the stomach hydrochloric acid and thus rendered inoperable. In contrast stands the risk of infection by introducing bacteria into the body and other risks that are to be observed, depending on the route of injection. As with parenteral drugs would technically easier, a defined blood levels can be adjusted as with orally administered drugs, the intravenous injection of a high priority in particular, has in emergency medicine.

Syringe Tips with Luer Slip will be happy also with certain methods of analysis in the context of biomonitoring used ( solid phase extraction).
