Tabu - A story of love and guilt is a Portuguese film director Miguel Gomes of Drama from 2012.
Action
The socially engaged Pilar lives in a block of houses in the Greater Lisbon area, in close proximity to the flamboyant older Aurora and her Cape Verdean housekeeper. As Aurora is dying, she asks Pilar to look for a certain Gian Luca Ventura. When they find him in a retirement home, he tells her his surprising, affiliated with Aurora life story, which he had with the words Aurora a farm in Africa, at the foot of Monte taboo ... begins. Here, with a time jump of the second part of the film, which now shows the Ventura told story that takes place around 1960 in an unnamed Portuguese colony shortly before the outbreak of the Portuguese Colonial War.
Production
Referred to in the film Mount taboo does not exist in reality. The film was shot in the area of tea plantations of Gurué in the Mozambican province of Zambezia, also in Lisbon and Estoril Casino.
The film was shot in black and white. In the second part also the sound has been reduced. It is to hear the narrative voice Venturas, and various background noises and music of the movie scenes, but not dialogues. The film's title itself is a further reference to the silent movie, and plays on Murnau's film Tabu on.
At the production Portuguese institutions such as the film promotion institute ICA and the public television station RTP were involved, as this Brazilian partner's government Ancine Film Institute, and from France the CNC Filmförderungsanstalt. German partners were the ZDF, the film and media NRW and the Hamburg Film Fund Schleswig -Holstein. Also, the Franco-German channel Arte and the European MEDIA film support program were involved.
Reception
The film was shown in German cinemas on December 20, 2012. He started here in 47 cinemas, partly in special performances in the presence of the director.
Tabu was previously run on a variety of international film festivals, including at the Berlinale 2012, where he won the Alfred Bauer Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize. 2013, the film received in France the Prix du Syndicat Français de la Critique ( Best Foreign Film ).
The critics praised the film for its poetic, unconventional narrative that this is conclusive and is played fluently and skillfully takes at various points relating to film history. Was positive also noticed the subtle humor, such as in some dialogs in the first part, or if the song Be My Baby is heard in different versions rather unknown in the second part. Thus, in a scene, the beat band from the Friends of the young Aurora by the pool and plays the song, while for the viewer which is incorporated into a later period version of the Ramones is heard.
