Tagbanwa people

The Tagbanuwa (or Tagbanwa ) live in the Philippine province of Palawan. They are among the oldest tribes in the Philippines.

There are two groups:

  • Central Tagbanuwa live in the coastal areas of central Palawan in the communities Aborlan, Quezon and Puerto Princesa
  • Calamian Tagbanuwa live on Baras, Busuanga, Coron and some parts of El Nido

Both groups speak different languages and also show differences in customs.

According to census 2000, the tribe has about 10,000 members.

The Tagbanuwa live in stable communities and derive their name from taga = and of = banuwa village from. To protect their way of life, the Coron Iceland Protected Area was established in 1998. They belong to the Southeast Asian ethnic type, associated with the Austronesian linguistic community and have a unique syllabary, which was founded in 1999 by UNESCO to the "Memories of Mankind" (see Tagbanuwa font). This font is related to a poetic style that is based on the number of syllables in a line.
