Tāmaki Makaurau

Tamaki Makaurau is one of seven in New Zealand created specifically for Māori Māori Electorate.

The term Electorate referred to in New Zealand and Australia constituencies, whereas in the UK so that the electorate or voters are meant.

At the last general election in 2008 was carried out Pita Sharples Russell, candidate of the Māori Party, was elected with nearly 66 % of the vote over the direct mandate of the electoral district in the New Zealand Parliament.

Geography

The constituency Tamaki Makaurau today consists of the areas of Auckland City and each of the largest part of Waitakere City and Manukau City. It was created in 2002 from the division of the constituency in Hauraki and Tamaki Makaurau Tainui. The constituency Tainui was later changed to Hauraki - Waikato.

Background information

At the 2008 general election in the constituency Tamaki Makaurau 35606 voters of Maori descent had entered in the electoral rolls. 20526 (57.6 %) of them gave their vote for a party and from 19994 ( 56.2%) of them for one of the nominated candidates. Judging, however, from the Māori Ethnic 89751 inhabitants, which were determined for the 2006 census, only an estimated 39% of the Māori population of the constituency have registered on the electoral lists. The turnout based on the number of inhabitants had lain in accordance with an estimated 22%.
