Tamaki River

The Tamaki River is an estuary and natural harbor on the Hauraki Gulf in the area of Auckland in New Zealand. It extends 15 km to the south. Its mouth lies between the Auckland suburb of Saint Heliers and the long thin peninsula of Bucklands Beach, which ends with Musick Point.

The inlet passes on its way to the inland suburbs Glendowie, Glen Innes, Tamaki, Panmure and Otahuhu on its western side, and Sunny Hills and Pakuranga on its east side.

He has several smaller tributaries, the Pakuranga Creek and the Otara Creek to the east, the Otahuhu Creek and the Panmure Basin in the west. The Otahuhu Creek forms the eastern shore of the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Auckland. The Tamaki River is just 2 km from the Manukau Harbour, part of the Tasman Sea, away.

Transportation

Portage Road is the site of a portage of. Between the Tamaki River and Manukau Harbour Here the Maori drew their canoes over land to overcome the bottleneck and avoid the trip to the North Cape. This gave the place in pre-European times, as in the early years of European occupation of major strategic importance.

1865 Panmure, the first bridge was built across the estuary to improve the connection between Auckland and Howick. Stones and steel had then still to be brought from Australia.

Transportation

Due to its north- south extent and its location between Auckland City and Manukau, the river is a natural barrier to traffic, especially cross it only two bridges. These are both very busy and increasingly unable to accommodate the volume of traffic at peak times. The AMETI project has therefore eliminating this bottleneck as one of its goals.

The Tamaki River has a marina and a ferry pier at the Half Moon Bay. From there, ferries to the Auckland CBD and car ferries to Waiheke Iceland. Many boats are moored and elsewhere in the relatively protected inside the arm of the sea.
