History

The rural community Tamaya emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 at a nationwide administrative reform in a previously unincorporated area.

Population

At the 2001 census Tamaya had 9052 inhabitants. For the year 2010 12.170 inhabitants were calculated. Tamaya is an important center of the light-skinned Igdalen who live here together with the descendants of their former dark-skinned slaves, and the traditional local chief ( chef traditionnal ) position. Both groups speak the Songhai Berber mixed language Tagdal as their first language. The Igdalen apply the Tuareg as conservative Muslims and the Koran experts.

Economy and infrastructure

The south of the community is still in the zone of Agropastoralismus, in the north there is the pure pasture farming. The Igdalen traditionally live as nomadic ranchers who drive their flocks until after Ingall, who said some now established as small merchants, and gardeners. By Tamaya National Road 25 runs between the regional capitals Agadez and Tahoua.
