Tamaz V. Gamkrelidze

Tamas Gamqrelidse (Georgian თამაზ გამყრელიძე; Russian Тамаз Валерианович Гамкрелидзе ) ( born October 23, 1929 in Kutaisi ) is a Georgian linguist and orientalist. He is since 1973 director of the Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. Since 1974 he has been President of the Academy in 2005 and Academician since February.

Life

In 1952 he completed a Oriental Studies at the State University of Tbilisi. In 1963 he received his doctorate in 1964 he completed his habilitation there. In 1966 he obtained the chair of structural and applied linguistics.

He has written books on Indo-European and ancient languages ​​, theoretical, structural and applied linguistics, as well as Kartwelistik. From 1988 to 1995 he was editor of the Notices issued by the Russian Academy of Sciences journal Voprosy Jasykosnanija ( Вопросы языкознания ). He is a foreign honorary member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, corresponding member of the British Academy, a Fellow of the European Society of Linguistics (1986-1988 its chairman ), corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Saxon Academy of Sciences, Honorary Doctor of the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms- University and the University of Chicago.

From 1992 to 2005 Gamqrelidse was a member of the Georgian parliament.

He is the brother of the mathematician Rewas Gamqrelidse.

Research
