Tammy Wynette

Tammy Wynette (born Virginia Wynette Pugh, born May 5, 1942 in Itawamba County, Mississippi, † April 6, 1998 in Nashville, Tennessee) was an American country music singer. Her biggest success was Stand by Your Man from the year 1968.

Biography

Virginia Wynette Pugh grew after the early death of her father in her grandparents. She married at the age of 17 years. Shortly before the birth of the third child, she was abandoned by her husband. At this time, she worked in a beauty salon. In order to supplement their low salary, she sang occasionally in local clubs. Worse were their financial problems by the severe and long- lasting meningitis of her youngest child.

1966 Pugh drove to Nashville, hoping for a career as a country singer. After a few failed attempts they got a recording contract with the record company Epic.
