Tamou

Region

Tamou is a rural municipality in the department of Say in Niger.

Geography

Tamou is located on Diamongou, a tributary of the Niger River, and is located in the northern section of the Great landscape Sudan. The municipality is divided into 85 traditional villages, 62 administrative villages and three hamlets. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village Tamou.

Tamou bordered on the southwest by the neighboring country Burkina Faso. The neighboring communities in Niger Say in the north, the east and Kirtachi Ouro Guélédjo in the West. Immediately southeast of the town center extends the W National Park or its buffer zone, the Wildlife Reserve Réserve de faune de Tamou total.

History

The German explorer Heinrich Barth visited the area in 1854, the inhabitants of a large number of horses owned and which he described as a matter exceptionally wealthy. Barth mentioned by name Ouro Mobido ( " Court of the learned nobleman " ), now an administrative village in the municipality of Tamou, as the residence of a wealthy landowner. The French colonial administration set up in the early 20th century, a canton in a Tamou whose territory was enlarged successively by resolution cantons: Ouérésouldou and Nani Fonou and most recently in 1932 Tiala and Diongoré. 2002 emerged the rural community Tamou as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the Canton Tamou.

Population

At the 2001 census Tamou had 52 917 inhabitants. For the year 2010 70.035 inhabitants were calculated. Tamou is located in an area inhabited by the ethnic group of Gourmantché region, the Gourmantché throughout the region Tilabéri represent only 2% of the total population.

Economy and infrastructure

The municipality is located in a zone is operated in the rain-fed agriculture, and is affected by violence associated with land use conflicts.
