The Tampa airport (Tampa International Airport ) is the international airport of the city of Tampa in Florida. With approximately 16.97 million passengers a year (in 2009 ) he is in passenger volumes at number 26 in North America.

History

Drew Field

Tampa Bay was the birthplace of commercial airline service, Tony Jannus the inaugural flight of the St Petersburg -Tampa flew as a pioneer on January 1, 1914 Airboat Line of Saint Petersburg to Tampa with a flying boat; it was the world's first commercial flight with a " heavier -than- air" aircraft.

1928 built the city of Tampa, 10 km west of the city center on 0.65 km2 airfield Drew Field. During the Second World War the United States Army Air Force took over the airfield and expanded and modernized it. He was subsequently renamed in Drew Army Airfield and the Third Air Force for training purposes and used for anti-submarine defense patrols.

After the end of hostilities, Eastern and National Airlines moved to Drew Field. 1950 were offered by TransCanada Airlines first international flights and the airport was renamed Tampa International Airport. 1952 a second passenger terminal was opened. Other airlines, including Delta and Northwest, flew in the late 1950s, new to Tampa.

Airport today

The airport was until today expanded several times and now includes four terminals. A new track ( 17-35 ) has already planned to increase the capacity in poor weather conditions. In addition, a new terminal to be built in the north, which will increase the airport's capacity by 2025 to over 50 million passengers. Due to the current economic situation, these plans were postponed for several years.

With effect from 13 January 2011, the tracks are newly designated (eg 18R/36L to 19R/1L ) to take account of the shift of the magnetic north pole. In the course of January 2011, and therefore the orbits successively temporarily blocked in order to apply new markings.
