Tan Siew Sin

Tun Tan Siew Sin ( born May 21, 1916 in Malacca, † 17 March 1988 in Kuala Lumpur ) was the first Finance Minister of Malaysia and Chairman of the Malaysian Chinese Association ( MCA). He is the only son of its founder Tan Cheng Lock and took over after his death in 1960, from November 1961 to April 1974, the leadership of the party.

Life

In 1939, he completed his law studies in London and returned to Malaya. Then he initially took care of the plantation the family business.

From 1941 to 1945 he worked for the British Information Service in India, where he founded along with his father, the Overseas Chinese Society.

After Cheah Toon Lock decided not to run for re-election as President of the MCA, Tan Siew Sin took over on 10 November 1960, the leadership of the party. In 1969, he became Minister of Finance.

On April 8, 1974, he resigned for health reasons back as chairman of the MCA and Finance. After his resignation, he was advisor to the government on economic matters and chairman of Sime Darby Berhad.
