Tanaro (river)

Location of the Tanaro River in northern Italy

The Tanaro is a river in the south of the Piedmont. It rises in the Ligurian Alps, on the border with Liguria and France and ends after 276 km below Bassignana right in the butt.

It flows in a northerly and north-easterly direction, the provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria. In Alessandria it is navigable for larger vehicles. Its catchment area covers 8234 km ², its largest tributaries are the Sant'Ellero and Pesio, the Stura di Demonte, the Belbo and Bormida.

After the river the former French Département Tanaro (1797-1815) was named based in Asti.
