Tang of Shang

King Tang (汤) of Shang in China, († 1742 BC), birth name Zǐ Lǚ (子 履), was the founder and the first king of China's Shang Dynasty. He is now as Shang Tang (商汤) Wǔ Tang (武 汤), Tian yǐ (天乙), cheng Tang (成汤) or Táng cheng (成 唐) refers. He appears as Táng (唐), Da yǐ (大 乙) or Gāozǔ yǐ (高祖 乙) on the oracle bones. He was the leader of the Shang tribe. After marriage with Youxin Shi he appointed the talented Yi Yǐn (伊尹) and Zhong Huǐ (仲 虺) each Minister and Minister to the right to the left. He occupied the place Bó as a military outpost to prepare for the destruction of the Xia Dynasty.

Zi Lu took over the rule of the Shang tribe from its predecessor Shi Gui and ruled for 17 years as a tribal leader. When he saw the decline of the Xia Dynasty, he led eleven wars against them, in which he won a lot of land and make many smaller states to his vassals. Following an insurgence in Xia Zi Lu defeated in the battle Mingtiao ( about 1766 BC), the corrupt Jie, the last king of the Xia Dynasty, and ruled as King Tang to 1742 BC China.

King Tang's reign is seen as a boon for the Chinese people. He lowered taxes and the conscription of soldiers. He expanded the influence of his dynasty until about the Yangtze River and won some vassal states.

Comments on Tang's name

Cheng means " successful" and thus is not a name of Tang It points to the recognition of future generations to his successful government policy. Wu means " military," and points out that the following generations his military success against Jie recognized.
