Tanikaze Kajinosuke

Tanikaze Kajinosuke (Japanese谷 风 梶 之 助; born September 8, 1750 in Sendai, † February 27, 1795 ) was a famous sumo wrestler of the Edo period and the first historical record Yokozuna.

Tanikaze, the (与 四郎) came under the name Yoshirō to the world, began at the age of 19 under the name Dategaseki battle with sumo and joined in fighting until he died at 45 from influenza. Over the course of 70 tournaments he lost only in 20 fights. Seven tournaments he won in series without a defeat, and that twice. He certainly helped his superior stature: With 1.89 meters tall and 169 kilograms, it was for that time a giant Japanese standards. Its popularity is reflected in the numerous preserved Ukiyo -e resist ( woodcuts ), which show him in the portrait or the fight.

1789 were Tanikaze and Onogawa, who fought at this time as sekiwake, promoted to Yokozuna. They were, however, remain on the Banzuke rankings as ozeki since the yokozuna was only as a kind of ozeki with special ceremonial authority in the early days.
