The Tara is one of the headwaters of the River Drina and at 140 km length of the longest river in Montenegro. In its lower reaches the Tara has trained a canyon that is the longest and deepest in Europe.

Course

The river is formed at an altitude of about 2000 meters in the Žijevo Mountains, on the Montenegrin- Albanian border, approximately 30 km south of Kolasin from the confluence of the Opasanica and the somewhat larger as longer Veruša. From Prošćenje to the confluence with the Piva at Hum on the Montenegrin- Bosnian border, the Tara has carved over the millennia than 1,300 meters deep in the surrounding mountains and formed the Tara Canyon. The river has an average gradient of 3.6 m / km in this area.

Tara Canyon

The Tara canyon has a length of 78 kilometers and a depth of over 1300 meters. This makes it the longest and deepest gorge in Europe. It belongs next to the Colorado Canyon in the U.S. and some Asian gorges of the largest in the world.

National park

Bridges
