Târgu Lăpuș

Targu Lapus [ tɨrgu ləpuʃ ] ( until 1920 Lăpuşu Unguresc; German -Hungarian Laposch, Hungarian Magyarlápos ) is a town in Maramureş County in Romania.

The place is also known by the German name Eberfeld.

Location

Targu Lapus is located in northern Transylvania in the Lapus River. The county town Baia Mare is located about 30 km north-west.

History

1291 was the place - the then part of the Kingdom of Hungary - first mentioned under the name Lapus. He developed into the economic center of the country Laposcher ( Tara Lapusului ). Targu Lapus was primarily influenced by Hungary, while in the now partially eingemeindeten villages in the area (except Dămăcuseni / Domokos ) almost exclusively lived Romanians. Transylvanian Saxons played here in contrast to many other regions of Transylvania hardly matters. 1968 Targu Lapus was declared a city. Today, agriculture and forestry and wood processing are the main industries.

Population

1850 lived on the territory of today's 7,884 people, including 1,529 in Targu Lapus and 6,355 in today's incorporated towns. 5,745 thereof described themselves as Romanians, Hungarians than 1,700, 262 and 105 as Jews as Roma. As a result, the proportion of Romanians increased, whereas that of Hungary fell. As of the 2002 census, 13,355 residents were registered, of which 5,844 in Targu Lapus and 7511 in several incorporated villages. 11,548 were Romanians, 1,659 Hungarians and 140 Roma.

Overcoming the efforts that school exclusion of Roma children in Targu Lapus, treated the 2011 finished documentary " Our School " by Mona Nicoară and Miruna Coca- Cozma.

Traffic

Targu Lapus has no rail connection. There are regular bus services to Baia Mare.

  • The wooden church Sf. Arhangheli (built in 1663 Suciu de Sus ) in the district Rogoz, was erected here in 1883; is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
