Seini

Seini ( German Leuchtenburg, Hungarian Szinérváralja ) is a city located in Maramureş County in the north- western Romania.

The place is also known by the German names Sienerburg and Sienerln. The estimated population is around 9,000. Seini has an area of ​​58.91 km ².

The city is located 26 km northwest of the town Baia Mare (Hungarian Nagybánya ). The town includes the villages of Viile Apei and Sabisa.

History

The Leuchtenburg castle was first mentioned in 1490. In 1677 the castle and the surrounding town were burned down by the Tatars, with a large part of the population was able to escape. According to the historical data was in 1717, almost the entire population, which consisted, massacred or enslaved mainly from Hungary. Later Romanians have settled. In 1952, the population amounted to 5056 persons who were about equally Romanians and Hungarians. Many of the living here Satu Mare Swabians have called Hungary, the assimilation process was much more intense than in the Banat in south-western Romania.

Worth seeing is the ruined castle, which still exists today.
