Tarusa

Tarusa (Russian Таруса, German also Tarusa ) is a small town in Russia and the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons in the Kaluga oblast. Tarusa lies at the mouth of the river Tarusa in the Oka, about 70 km from the regional center of Kaluga, and has 9660 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Tarusa is an important Russian cultural center, which has always attracted artists, poets, writers and other cultural workers because of its scenic location on the high bank of the Oka.

History

Tarusa was first mentioned in 1246 and belonged to the Grand Duchy of Moscow since the 14th century. During standing on the Ugra, the city served as a base of the army of the Grand Duchy of Moscow under Ivan III .. Tarusa was attacked several times in the course of its early history of the Crimean Tatars. Already in the 16th century, the town was fortified to defend the Oka - shore and also served as a fortress in order to protect the southern flank of Moscow. During the Patriotic War against the Napoleonic army Tarusa was the next town in the Moscow countryside, over which the Russian troops were supplied with food.
