Teddy Mayer

Edward Everett "Teddy" Mayer ( born September 8, 1935 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, † January 30, 2009 in England) was an American entrepreneur and manager. From 1970 to 1982 he was co-owner and team principal of Formula 1 team McLaren.

Life

Mayer studied law and came during his studies by his active there as a driver brother Timmy in contact with the Formula Junior. After graduating in 1962 attracted both accompanied by the driver Peter Revson to England, where they joined the newly founded Formula 1 team of Bruce McLaren. After the fatal racing accident in 1964 and his brother Bruce McLaren in 1970, he became the team principal of the McLaren racing team. Under his leadership, Emerson Fittipaldi collected in 1974 and James Hunt in 1976 the world championship of Formula 1 After the success at the end of the 1970s subsided, it came at the instigation of the main sponsor Marlboro in a concentration with McLaren and Project Four, which was led by Ron Dennis. After two years of joint team management Mayer sold his shares and left the team.

He then moved up to the Championship Auto Racing Team racing series, where he had a special team under the name of Mayer Motor Racing. In 1985 he returned briefly as manager of the team Haas Lola Formula 1, by the withdrawal of the main sponsor the team, however, was in 1986 forced to close. He then joined the NASCAR and Indycar team Penske Racing, where he worked as a manager and consultant until 2007.
