Tekle Giyorgis I.

Tekle Giyorgis I. ( äthiop. ተክለ ጊዮርጊስ, " fruit of the Saint George " ) ( † 1825) was intermittently from 20 July 1779 to June 1800 Negest Negus ( Emperor ) of Ethiopia and a member of Salomoniden Dynasty. He was the son of Yohannes II and the brother of Tekle Haymanot II

Life

After Ras Wolde Selassie and Ras Kefla Adyam had brought him in 1779 from the royal prison on Wehni and inserting as an emperor, Tekle Giyorgis was still five times lose the crown and recover. Until his dismissal on February 8, 1784 Ras Abeto of Gojam, he was not very popular and was forced to temporarily Ras Wolde Selassie refuge from search. Ultimately, he could bring his authority in any part of his kingdom to bear. Budge notes that he withdrew from Gojam and turned to the Afarwanat, where he was defeated in battle and subsequently fled to Amba Sel.

Ras Tekle Giyorgis marriage Ali reinstated as Emperor on 24 April 1788 two rivals for the throne had entered the stage: Atse Iyasus Baeda and Maryam were both supported by opponents Ras Ali. Until his dismissal on July 26, 1789 Tekle Giyorgis was one of five emperors who ruled Ethiopia in 1788-1789. The remaining two were Iyasu III. and Tekle Haymanot.

In January 1794 Tekle Giyorgis defeated the warlord Ras Haile and was again emperor. He went into the province Dembiya in the northwestern part of Begemder looking for support from Dejazmach Gadelu. The Dejazmach did not want to see him. However, the brother Ras Ali, Ras Aligaz whose large army encamped in Tchat Gobelins, received him and with his support Tekle Giyorgis was able to occupy the throne until 15 April 1795.

Tekle Giyorgis was taken on May 20, 1796 the fourth time as emperor on the throne. He retained this position until 15 July 1797. His fifth term as emperor was dated 4 January 1798 to 20 May in 1799 and his last on 24 March 1800 to June of the same year.

Richard Pankhurst notes that Tekle Giyorgis church Debre Maryam Metmaq in Gondar built - the last witness of imperial patronage in that century.
