Temuka

Temuka is a small town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located 15 kilometers north of Timaru and 142 km south of Christchurch amidst dominated by sheep farming and dairy farming region, for which it is the service center.

The name was originally Te umu kaha, Māori for " durable ovens ", which refers to earth ovens that used the Māori to prepare the spot where many growing cabbage trees ( Cordyline australis).

Previously Temuka had its own town council, is today but also managed by the Timaru District Council. In the past, the town was modernized including through the expansion of the footpath network, of the installation of gardens and tennis courts and a skate park.

With 4044 inhabitants, it is one of the larger towns in southern Canterbury. Temuka is located on State Highway 1 and the Main South Line of the New Zealand rail network. To the south of Temuka flow of the Opihi River and Temuka River.

Train

Temuka has two primary schools and a secondary educational institution.

The Temuka Primary School is a primary contibuting Scool for 1st - 6th Class. In 2009 she had a decile rating of 5 and 264 students .. The St. Joseph's Temuka is a full primary school for the first -8. Class and in 2009 had a decile of 5 and 90 students.

The Opihi College was created in 2005 from the Temuka High School. The secondary school for the 7th - 15th Class has a decile of 5 and 385 pupils.

Economy

Previously, a wool wash and a mill were located in Temuka and electrical insulators were produced. The Fonterra Co -operative Group is the largest company in New Zealand and employed in Temuka numerous inhabitants. Fonterra processed milk from all over the South Island to dairy products which are exported to a large extent.

In Temuka Temuka is transport, a transport company with over 40 trucks that serve South Canterbury located. The company Temuka Homeware manufactures ceramic tableware.
