The Real sawflies ( Tenthredinidae ) constitute a family of sawflies ( Symphyta ) within the Hymenoptera ( Hymenoptera). They are also referred to as " sawflies ", but this can cause confusion, because there are other families within the sawflies sawfly. The animals are found worldwide with about 9,000 species, making them the largest family of sawflies. 1070 species and subspecies live in Europe, more than 900 of them coming in Central Europe. They are common all over the world, only in Australia are only three known species ( and five introduced by humans).

Features

The animals are depending on the type 2 to 20 millimeters long and are usually black or brown in color. But as well as their appearance, the coloring is extremely diverse. There are many types that are colored bright green, red or yellow and have various patterns. The Real sawflies can not sting, many species imitate real wasps thereby act dangerous ( mimicry ). As all sawflies also lacks the genuine sawflies the wasp waist between the thorax and abdomen. Their antennae are long and have 7 to 15 members, mostly there are but nine. In many species they are combed or thickened club-shaped at the end. The Flügeladerung is well trained, but it lacks the Subcostalader on the front wings.

Most larvae ( caterpillars after ) to see how the all sawflies very similar to caterpillars of butterflies, but differ from them by a total of eight, rather than seven pairs of legs. But larvae of discriminatory species have no or reduced legs. The animals have three-to five-membered sensor.

Way of life

The adults are mostly flower visitors, but some species also are predators of smaller insects.

The larvae feed on phytophagous of a variety of deciduous trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. The larvae mainly sit on the leaves - often in groups - and eat the leaf margin Coming inside. In case of failure, they bend the body to a characteristic "S". Only the types of Heterarthrinae are leaf miners, others are drill or form plant galls. Some species are considered pests in agriculture.
