Terence Thomas, Baron Thomas of Macclesfield

Terence James " Terry " Thomas, Baron Thomas of Macclesfield CBE (* October 19, 1937 ) is a British Labour Party politician and the Co-operative Party and retired banker.

Life and career

Thomas was the manager of the National Westminster Bank, National Provincial Bank later. From 1971 to 1973 he worked as Research Manager and later as director of national sales.

Thomas joined in 1973 to a position with the Co -operative Bank as marketing manager. He was there for nine years as a Chief Executive working and joined in the late 1990s to retire.

He was 1990-1996 President ( Chairman ) of the East Manchester Partnership and founding Chairman ( Chairman ) of the North West Partnership. From 1997 to 1998 he was Chairman ( Chair ) of the Capita Group.

Thomas was a member of the Supervisory Board ( Council) of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and from 1983 to 1985 lead auditor in marketing for financial services. From 1988 to 1991 he held a visiting professorship at the University of Stirling. In the venture Technic (Cheshire ) Ltd, he was from 1984 to 2000 chairman. This office he held from 1998 to 1999 also in North West Media Trust Ltd, and the 1998 to 2002 in the North West Development Agency from. He was also Chairman of Vector Investments.

He was non-executive director of Stanley Leisure plc and from 1998 to 1999, English Partnerships (Central), as well as the Commission for the New Towns. The Campaign to Promote the University of Salford ( CAMPUS ) he was a member of the Board of Trustees. He held this position even with UNICEF.

Membership in the House of Lords

Thomas was appointed Life peer as Baron Thomas of Macclesfield, of Prestbury in the County of Cheshire on November 5, 1997. His inaugural address was delivered on 11 February 1998.

In 1999 he suffered a stroke. Although he remained active, he enlisted in the following years initially only in written questions on word. In April 2004, he again spoke in the House of Lords. On 8 December 2008, he came back to word. Since then he spoke again there is not (as of December 2012).

Until recently he was a member of the House of Lords Monetary Policy & European Affairs Select Committee.

He was also Chairman of Opportunity Specialist in 2000, where he campaigned for the rights of women in the workplace. He is a member of the Regional Policy Forum, President of the Society for Co-operative Studies, Honorary President of the Northwest Co-operative and Mutual Council and Life President of the North West Business Leadership Team.

Thomas was in session after his serious illness sporadically present. After 2010, he took part in any meetings more. He is on leave since June 21, 2012 by the House of Lords granted leave of absence.

More offices

Thomas was president of the Manchester Settlement, vice president of the Northern Friends of the arm and the Industrial Trust. He was also the patron ( patron ) of the Red Rose Forest, Mersey Forest, the Pedestrians Association, West Lancs Disability Helpline, Mines Advisory Group and the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester.

His autobiography, An Inclusive Community with Integrity was published in 2008 and described the details of a two-year struggle, the Co-operative Wholesale Society to hold from the sale of the bank. He was 1988-1995 president. When Robert Owen Memorial Museum, he is non-executive director.

Honors

Thomas in 1997, Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

At the University of Central Lancashire, he was an Honorary Fellow. He became Doctor of Letters ( Hon DLitt ) from the University of Salford in 1996. The Manchester Metropolitan University Thomas recorded in 1998 with an honorary doctorate by the University. He was also in 1999 that. 1998 Thomas Mancunian of the Year was. He is a Fellow of the Corporation of Insurance Brokers and the Royal Society of Arts ( since 1992) and Companion of the Institute of Management.
