Territorial evolution of Canada

This article highlights the territorial development of Canada with all the changes in the external and internal borders.

Comments

  • The Northwest Territories consisted of various districts, but the Keewatin district had a higher status, which is why this is also noted. In 1905 it was incorporated into the Northwest Territories and finally resolved with the creation of Nunavut in 1999.
  • The maps used on this page form for simplicity from the present borders of Labrador, as the territorial claims of Quebec and Newfoundland overlapped.

Development

The Dominion of Canada comes from three areas of British North America: The Province of Canada, which is divided into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, as well as the colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

The United Kingdom takes the majority of its remaining territory in British North America from Canada to Rupert 's Land and the North- Western Territory are combined to form the Northwest Territories. The independent Dominion Newfoundland and its dependent territory Labrador join Canada and the province of Newfoundland.

The territory of Nunavut is cleaved from the Northwest Territories. In addition, the name of the province of Newfoundland in Newfoundland and Labrador is changed on 6 December 2001.
