Terry Atkinson

Terry Atkinson (born 16 July 1939 in Thurnscoe Barnsley, Yorkshire, United Kingdom, lives in Leeds, England ) is a British conceptual artist, painter, illustrator, author and co-founder and until 1974 a member of the artist group Art & Language.

Life and work

Terry Atkinson studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1960 to 1964. He taught at the Birmingham College of Art from 1964 to 1966, at the Lanchester Polytechnic and at the Coventry School of Art from 1967., Where he met student Michael Baldwin know.

Atkinson was a founding member (along with colleagues John Bowstead, Roger Jeffs and Bernard Jennings ) of the group Fine Artz in London in November of the year 1963. He participated in the Fine Artz Group Exhibition " Action Chair" in London in May 1964 and at the Fine Artz Group "Miss Misty Show" at the University of Aston in Birmingham May, 1966 part. He separated from Fine Artz in May 1966.

He then traveled to New York City, where he came into contact with Sol LeWitt, Dan Graham, Carl Andre and Robert Smithson. From July to September 1967, he visited Los Angeles.

Terry Atkinson began in 1967 in Coventry, a collaboration with Michael Baldwin in conceptual work. In 1968, Atkinson and Baldwin founded the avant-garde art group Art & Language, to which a short time later Harold Hurrell and David Bainbridge met who taught in Coventry. Art & Language, was a group that got a big influence on other artists in the UK and in the U.S. soon.

In 1969, Atkinson traveled again to New York, where he met Joseph Kosuth, Lawrence Weiner, On Kawara, Christine Kozlov and Robert Barry.

Terry Atkinson was a member of Art & Language in 1972 participants of the Documenta 5 in Kassel with the " Index 0001" in the department Idea Idea / light, along with the Art & Language artists Harold Hurrell, David Bainbridge, Ian Burn Michael Baldwin, Charles Harrison, Mel Ramsden and the U.S. specialists for art Joseph Kosuth language. With Art & Language, he was represented at the Documenta 6 in 1977 again. Atkinson finished his teaching career at Coventry in 1973 and the following year his membership in the Art & Language. He was represented as an artist under his own name, including at the Venice Biennale in 1984. In 1985 he was nominated for the Turner Prize.

Terry Atkinson uses in his concept art of painting and drawing, he uses mixed media and creates installations, writes articles and authored publications.

Since 2003 Atkinson teaches art at the University of Leeds.
