Terry Callier

Terry Callier ( born May 24, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois, † October 27, 2012 ) was an American jazz, soul and folk guitarist, singer and composer.

Career

Callier, a childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield, in the early sixties, took pictures, but gained no success despite regional celebrity. In particular, his three albums for the label Cadet, Occasional Rain, What Color Is Love (1972) and I Just Can not Help Myself (1973 ), received very good reviews and earned him a devoted following, a major commercial breakthrough was however denied Callier. At the end of the decade he spent two albums for Elektra. His sound became more commercial, among other things, he took disco elements into his music. 1982 was written for the small label Erect which also disco -heavy single I Do not Want to See Myself ( Without You ), which was hardly noted.

Due to lack of commercial success, he took in the early 1980s to a job as a programmer at the University of Chicago. However, he was known back after an English DJ started playing in the early 1990s his old recordings in the UK. The director of Acid Jazz Records, Eddie Pillar, was so attentive to him and brought him to occur regularly while holidaying in English club.

In the late 1990s, began his comeback and he resumed albums. There was a plate with Beth Orton and 1998 his work Time Peace, which the Time for Peace Award from the United Nations for "outstanding artistic achievement " won. His sudden fame also meant that he was dismissed from the University, who had known nothing up to that point of his life as a musician. Since then, new CDs from Callier most recently in 2009 published at regular intervals, the album Hidden Conversations. He died in October 2012 after a long illness at the age of 67 years.
