History

The valley was used by the Germans in about 7/8 Century AD settled. Crucially, the settlers sought out this ( with the possible exception of Balsthal ) pretty secluded valley, was probably especially hunting competition with the residents and the Jurasüdfusses that were previously in the region. Larger streams as va today Dünnern course facilitated the settlement. In order to operate its modest agriculture, the settlers had first hit the dense forest, but the valley remained until the 19th century, to the flat areas compared to non- dense forested today. The valley was probably comparatively early Christian missionary, was but since the 7th century, the monastery of Moutier - Grandval. The first known record of a Thaler Church exists for Balsthal, Lauper village and Matzendorf, depending from the 10th century. For office district, then known as the Bailiwick, the valley was under the Ancien Régime about the 16th century. For more historical events: see the individual community names.
