The 39 Clues

The 39 characters ( original English Title: The 39 Clues ) is a series of adventure books, which was started in 2008 by Rick Riordan and is continued since then by various authors.

Action

In the series it comes to the two siblings Dan and Amy Cahill (11 and 14 years old ), their grandmother Grace Cahill dies one day and a strange legacy behind. She put in a video all participants in the reading of the will, a choice: either they should take a million dollars of its assets or to engage in a kind of scavenger hunt. Though the siblings do not really understand the principle of the hunt, they decide against the million and embark on a hunt for the signs that a promise power over the world. Besides them come six more teams in the hunt.

From now on, the siblings travel all over the world, supported by their au pair Nellie Gomez girl. They learn that many Cahill have helped in the past to hide the signs, and that they have been arguing for years about 500. But hunting is not only difficult and mysterious, but also very dangerous, because the other teams are trying to overthrow another again and again out of the way.

The five family branches

There are four different branches of the family Cahill: Janus, Ekaterina, Lucian, Tomas. William McIntrey warns Amy and Dan in Volume 1 before the mysterious fifth branch, the Madrigals. All the teams know which branch they belong to, only Dan and Amy do not. Only in Volume 7 they learn that they are Madrigals.

Gideon and Olivia Cahill had four children: Katherine, Luke, Thomas and Jane. Gideon sacrificed his life and his fortune to find a cure for the plague. The serum, which he developed, actually protected against the plague, but had unexpected side effects. The people who took the serum, it changed the DNA and they were unfamiliar skills. Each of the four Cahill kids got a part of the formula for the production. Gideon died in a fire that destroyed his laboratory, killed. His remaining children suspected each other of sabotage, and in the end broke the family. They all went away and founded their own Cahill clan branch: Katherine - Ekaterina, Luke - Lucian, Thomas - Tomas, Jane - Janus. The branches of the family have for centuries on the fierce quest to find the next ingredient with which the serum can be produced, and battles against each other. Everyone wants to have the primary means in which all forces of the four branches are united, not only of their own branch. When a branch of the family of the solution comes close, he is prevented from doing so by the Madrigals. That is why they are hated by everyone else.

When the fire broke out, no one knew that Gideon's wife Olivia was pregnant with the fifth child: Madeleine Cahill, founder of the Madrigal branch. Olivia has initially supported her husband. Later, however, she was horrified by what the greed had caused in her family. Their children were scattered everywhere and following their own plans, she was alone with the baby. Olivia watched in horror as the serum broke up the family. She raised Madeleine in the belief that it is more important than anything else, bring the family together again. Madeleine Cahill has sworn an oath at the deathbed of her mother, sure they have everything in their power, will do it.
