The Astral Sleep is the second studio album by the metal band Tiamat. It was released in September 1991 via Century Media.
Formation and style
After going strong death- doom- laden, occasionally be arranged as Black Metal debut Sumerian Cry Johan "Lucifer Hellslaughter " Edlund announced that the following LP was to be a concept album. On The Astral Sleep first emerged Keyboards, a cleaner guitar sound was used. Comparisons with the once known as Gothic Metal style of Paradise Lost were already then pulled to identified influences from Venom and King Diamond. The album was recorded with Waldemar Sorychta in Dortmund, the seat of the new label Century Media, on this album first appeared. Sorychta played also a guitar in Ancient Entity.
In 2006, the album was re-released with two bonus tracks the single A Winter Shadow from 1990.
Reception
Frank Albrecht called the album in Rock Hard magazine as a " real surprise ". The band can achieve through their innovative sounds eerily many different Fanschichten ". The peculiarities of this plate catch for example even at the strange gothic guitar sound of Tiamat in the has hardly been used to date a band. To this end, the aggressive, yet melancholic vocals of band leader Johan and the peculiar rhythm of the songs come ... " He forgave nine out of ten.
