Biography

In the summer of 1961 were Bob Spickard and Warren Waters students at the high school in Santa Ana, Orange County, California. Influenced by the band The Rhythm Rockers they decided to form their own band. Without musical experience began playing guitar Bob and Warren Bass. More school friends, Rob Marshall classical piano training and Brian Carman, whose brother was a saxophonist at the "Rhythm Rockers ", also moved on to the band. Having tried their luck with various drummers, including Gil Gonzales, was preserved Bob Welch of the band and borrowed the drums of Gil Gonzales. According to regular rehearsals they had their first gig in December 1961 at the Tustin Youth Center and played under the name " the Chantays ". After appearances in the " Surf Battle of The Bands " in the " Deauville Castle Club " in Santa Monica, California and the " Lawrence Welk Show " reached pipeline in May 1963, # 4 on the Billboard charts in the U.S. and number 16 in the UK.

After the success of the single pipeline Monsoon / Scotch Highs and the second album Two Sides Of The Chantays appeared, but the " Chantays " at their last success could not go. Having Bob Welch left the band in the summer of 1964 for his studies, took over Steve Khan, a friend of the band, the vacant post. on the following 3-month Hawaii tour the " Chantays " had to falsify their identity cards to be able to play in various bars and clubs.
