The Nightingale and the Rose ( The Nightingale and the Rose) is a literary fairy tale by Oscar Wilde. It appeared in 1888 in the prose collection The Happy Prince and Other Fairy Tales. Of these, it is one of the better known, there are several adaptations for ballet and opera.

Content

A young student wants to dance with the daughter of a professor at a ball. But you only agrees when he brings her a red rose. The student is unhappy that he has not a rose in the garden, because he loves the daughter of the professor. A nightingale has pity on him and is impressed by his loyalty, so she embarks on a search for a red rose. She asks several rose bushes to give her a rose, but none of them is red. When she asks the red rosebush after a rose, he explains, the winter was too hard and he has not stood in flowers. But he could produce with the help of the heart blood of the nightingale a flower and turn red. The nightingale is prepared to do, because she wants the students to help. At night, she undergoes the terrible test: it stings a thorn of the rose bush so deep in your chest, he pierced her heart and sings all night for the shrub. The next morning as the student sees the rose, he immediately bring them to the professor's daughter. These dismisses him because the nephew of the Chamberlains has promised her jewelry.
