In this very short story Lord Murchison tells an old friend of a woman he once loved and wanted to marry her, but was now deceased. She had always been very closed and secretive, so that they aroused his suspicion. So one day he decided to pursue them when they sometimes secretly left the house.

So he found out that she sneaked into a room in a boarding house. Suspecting a lover behind the action, he confronted them the next day with his discovery. She confessed that she had been there, but a lover she would not have met there. Lord Murchison did not believe her and left her, after which she died shortly thereafter. When he later returned to the inn, he spoke with the owner, who confirmed to him that the woman had rented a room in which she had always been alone, where she had just read or even done anything.

After he tells the story finished, asks Lord Murchison his friend if he could believe that the mystery of the woman really just be that they have none. This affirms his question and the short story ends with Lord Murchison answer: " I ​​wonder" ( I wonder ) in which he expresses his doubts.
