The Maltese Falcon (yacht)
IMO no. 9384552
The 88-meter sailing yacht Maltese Falcon was developed by a team of international experts on behalf of Tom Perkins and built by Perini Navi in Turkey. The launch was in June 2006.
Novel rigging
For the first time a large sailing ship with a Dyna- rig was equipped, a rig that already developed the original Frankish engineer Wilhelm Prölss in Hamburg around 1960 to equip large cargo ships with it. It was not then put into practice.
It is a rig with firmly anchored in rotating masts sailing. The rig of the Maltese Falcon consists of three freely rotating masts made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic with 58 meters height with five deflected square sails. This creates an electronic / electrical / hydraulic control and reffbares rig with variable reefing options that requires only a minimum number of personnel at a given sail area.
History
In April 2009, the Maltese Falcon on www.yachtworld.com for € 99 million has been listed for sale. In July 2009, the yacht was sold for 60 million pounds at the Greek- British hedge fund manager Elena Ambrosiadou.
The ship's name is based on the novel " The Maltese Falcon " by Dashiell Hammett, who later became known as a film. The Maltese Falcon carries the ship as nautical emblems.
