The Moustache Brothers

The Moustache Brothers are a trio of artists from Mandalay, Myanmar ( Burma ), which was particularly well known for his sharp, satirical criticism of the ruling military regime in Myanmar. The live shows they continue to show every evening, are in addition to dissident satire of classic Burmese dance, interspersed with slapstick.

The trio consists of Par Par Lay, Lu Zaw, and Lu Maw. Par Par Lay, the real head of the troupe, led until 1996 by the shows. He died August 2, 2013 from kidney failure. This year, he and his cousin Lu Zaw arrested during a protest at the home of Aung San Suu Kyi in Rangoon. As a result, both were sentenced to prison for dissident statements and not released until six years later. Two other members of the National League for Democracy, who had organized the event, were also arrested and held captive six years. Lu Maw was then staying in Mandalay on and so was able to escape arrest. Amnesty International launched a campaign in favor of the detainees and it is believed that Aung San Suu Kyi has contributed through negotiations with the regime much their final release.

Shortly after the release of the trio once again began with performances, had, however, to escape rearrest, limit it to only English ideas and just prior to the foreign visitors. Lu Maw, who was not arrested and speaks the only fluent in English, since through the shows. Nevertheless, it is emphasized at every performance that Par Par Lay was the " Moustache Brother Number One". The show's Moustache Brothers can be visited in their maximum of 15 people theater -making in the 39th street in Mandalay still every night. Locals are not allowed to attend the performances.

For alleged involvement in the protest marches in September 2007, Par Par Lay was arrested on 25 September 2007 and released on October 30.

Par Par Lay died on August 2, 2013 in Mandalay from kidney failure.
