The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians

The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is an encyclopedic music lexicon, which applies in musicology as the best reference book in English on this subject. In addition to the MGG ( The music in past and present ), it is the most comprehensive guide to the music. First published by George Grove, whose name it bears to this day, it was under the editorship of Stanley Sadie to reference work in the English language both encyclopedic information about music theory and music history as well as to musician biographies.

Grove 's Dictionary

1878 published A Dictionary of Music and Musicians in four volumes, edited by Sir George Grove with Appendix and Index. The second edition in five volumes was published by John Alexander Fuller - Maitland and published 1904-1910. The also five-volume third edition followed in 1927, edited by Henry Cope Colles. A fourth edition in five volumes plus the supplementary volume, again edited by Colles, was published in 1940, the nine -volume, edited by Eric Blom fifth edition in 1954. The New Grove, 1st edition

With the next edition in 1980, the Encyclopedia has been extensively extended and now appeared as The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians in 20 volumes, edited by Stanley Sadie.

It was - re-issued in each subsequent year except 1982 and 1983 to 1995 inclusive - with minor improvements. A paperback edition followed in 1995.

The New Grove, 2nd edition

The second edition under this title (collectively, the seventh ) was published in 2001 in 29 volumes. This edition is available as Grove Music Online on the Internet. It was published by Stanley Sadie again, executive editor was John Tyrrell. The original plan of a CD -ROM edition was dropped back.
