The Persuasions

The Persuasions are a well-known a cappella band.

The roots of the Persuasions are the early 1960s in New York City, where 30 to 40 people from the neighborhood met every day on a basketball court, only played for a while and then all sang together. Jimmy " Bro" Hayes fell on one evening in the spring of 1962 that some of the men actually sang in harmony and came up with the idea of ​​a singing group to set up. So he invited the whole group to be in his apartment. Only four of them were: Jerry Lawson, Joe " Jesse " Russell, Jayotis Washington and Herbert " Tubo " Rhoad.

The five singers already sang for several years in garages, subway stations and similar environments with each other when they recorded one of these sessions as a demo. Producer David Dashev overheard the recording and sent it to Frank Zappa. He was impressed and invited the band to come to a California to make professional recordings. They agreed and signed in 1968 Zappa's Straight Records.

In the same year the debut album Spread the Word, can be heard on both the new studio and old live recordings. The early 1970s, then moved the band to Capitol Records, where she recorded three albums and also sang background vocals on recordings by other artists, as on Phoebe Snow's début LP. Street Corner Symphony from this period should be the best selling album of the band. The mid- 70s were released on A & M two underlaid with instrumental accompaniment albums. On Chirpin ', which was released on Elektra in 1977, the Persuasions sing again a cappella. In between, Washington had briefly left the band and was replaced by Willie C. Daniels.

End of 1988, then died Rhoad. The rest of the band remained and still published until the 21st century albums regularly. They also attended concerts among other Joni Mitchell and Ned Sublette.
