The Phoenix and the Turtle

The Phoenix and the Turtle Dove ( engl. The Phoenix and the Turtle ) is an action poem by William Shakespeare.

The work first appeared in 1601 in the anthology Love's Martyr or Rosaline 's Complaint, which was edited by Robert Chester. As the author of the anthology the pseudonym Torquato Caeliano was given. In fact, next to Shakespeare and John Marston and George Chapman were involved. Through the use of a foreign and false name, the authors tried to deceive the censors of Archbishop John Whitgift, but failed.
