The Prisoner of Zenda

The Prisoner of Zenda ( in the original The Prisoner of Zenda ) is an adventure novel published in 1894 by the British author Anthony Hope.

Action

Rudolf Rassendyll, a curious young Englishman travels to the fictional country Ruritania (which is approximately in Moravia ), there to attend the coronation of the king. Rassendyll sees the king very similar - due to an affair of an ancestor of the king. This leads to a series of mix-ups and finally to the rescue of the king in a conspiracy.

Reception

The novel was a bestseller, not only in Britain but also in Europe and the United States. The first German -language translation by Ronald M. Hahn, however, appeared only in 1987 under the title The Prisoner of Zenda in Ullstein.

Hope 1898 published a sequel under the title of Rupert Hentzau.
