The Solitude of Prime Numbers (novel)

The Solitude of Prime Numbers is a 2008 novel by Paolo Giordano published. The novel was made ​​into a film by director Saverio Costanzo. The theatrical release of the film of the same name took place in 2010 in Italy.

Content

The Solitude of Prime Numbers told in alternating chapters, most of the life of Alice Della Rocca and Mattia Balossino. Both protagonists are drawn by traumatic experiences from their childhood: Alice loses in one day their light-heartedness and confidence to her father, who has pushed them to a ski course in which they injured, and disability retains. Mattia leaves his mentally disabled twin sister Michela for a few hours alone in a park to go to a kids birthday party without them. When he returns, Michela has disappeared.

Both process these events during their youth in different ways: Alice is suffering from anorexia, Mattia has self-injurious behavior. In high school we learn the two know each other and are each other - through their loneliness - tightened. Both remain during school outsiders. Alice enters into an asymmetric friendship with the popular, but imperious Viola Bai for a short time. Mattias is the only school friend Denis, who is secretly in love with Mattia.

After graduating from high school Mattia and Alice remained friends. Mattia studied mathematics and is fascinated by algebra; Alice decides to displeasure of her father to become a photographer instead of studying. After graduating Mattia gets an offer for a research scholarship at a university in Germany, which he accepts. Alice learns during the illness of her mother in the hospital, the young physician Fabio Rovelli, whom she later marries. Only after years, Alice and Mattia meet again and it is clear that they are faced with a decision.

Reception

Giordano was awarded the Premio Strega literary award for the novel.

The Solitude of Prime Numbers 2008 was the best selling book in Italy and was sold in 26 countries.

In November 2009, began under the direction of Saverio Costanzo shooting for the film adaptation of the book. The film was released in Italy in autumn 2010 and in Germany in August 2011 in the cinemas.

The Solitude of Prime Numbers was published in 2009 as an audiobook by Random House Audio in one put forward by Daniel Brühl abridged reading version.
