Background

The film is an adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes novel, The Valley of Fear by Arthur Conan Doyle. The film is considered lost.

Protagonist H. A. Saintsbury (1869-1939) was regarded as Europe's leading Holmes actor and had shown him more than 1,400 times on stage; this is the only film of his career.

For the first time occurs Holmes ' nemesis Professor Moriarty in appearance.
