Theobald V, Count of Blois

Theobald V of Blois (franz Thibaut, * 1130, † 1191 Acre ), called the Good ( le Bon ), was a Count of Blois, Chartres and county Châteaudun 1151-1191 out of the house Blois. He was a son of Count Theobald IV. / II. of Blois -Champagne and his wife Matilda, daughter of the Duke Engelbert of Carinthia.

Biography

After the death of his father in 1151 Theobald received from his older brother, Henry the Stammbesitzungen his family. To further ensure the political unity of the house Blois, Theobald had his brother swear allegiance duty a Vasallitätsverhältnis, which passed on his descendants and only in 1234 should be completed IV of Champagne by Count Theobald. Theobald lived mainly in the town of Chartres, whose walls he could renew.

In addition to Gottfried VI. of Anjou Theobald was the one who tried unsuccessfully in 1152 on their way from Beaugency to Poitiers to kidnap the newly divorced Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. He became a follower of King Louis VII of which he was appointed in 1154 to a Seneschal of France. Through the marriage of his sister Adela with the king in 1160 the house Blois became a dominant influence on the royal court. 1164 Theobald married Princess Alix, a daughter of the King and Eleanor.

With his nephew Philip II Theobald came into conflict after it detached itself from the tutelage of the Blois family and connected to Philip I, Count of Flanders. Theobald was the coronation of Philip away, and in 1180 revolted against him with his younger brothers Stephen I of Sancerre and Archbishop William of Reims. But by the year 1182 they were beaten and had to submit.

In the wake of King Theobald took part in the Third Crusade and fell in the course, as well as his brother Stephen of Sancerre, 1191 at the siege of Acre. He was buried in the Abbey of Pontigny. The office of seneschal of France was no longer awarded after his death.

Progeny

Prior to his marriage with Alix Theobald was married to Sibylle of Chateau -Renault, which earned him the possession of their ancestors in the marriage. This marriage remained childless.
